How is it already the second year of the OLTD program? Time has flown by, and I am so excited to get started! My life changed a lot through the summer. Another member of my cohort introduced me to ETHOS Career Management Group (read more about it here). In this role during the summer, I was helping create various Learning Management Systems (LMS) for different users. One LMS was for users who needed LGBTQ+ resources at work (read more about it here). A second LMS I was developing focused on employment skills for women with disabilities (read more about it here). A third LMS I was developing targeted youth and young adults creating their own business (read more about it here). Working for ETHOS full time over the summer was a great experience. I continued working for this company part time in the fall. I moved from Kamloops to Surrey at the end of the summer, I found myself in a new teaching role. In the first year of the OLTD program, I was taught a grade 2/3 class Monday and Tuesday, and a grade 4 class on Thursday and Friday. This year, I am working as a prep teacher, which includes teaching music for grades K-4, 2 classes of social studies 7 and one class of art 4. It's a very random assortment of classes to teach! Read more about my journey through education here. This unique position provides me with several different critical challenge questions to examine throughout the second year of the OLTD program. From the ETHOS perspective, how can an LMS be developed that is engaging and user centered? From a music prep perspective, how can I use technology in various way to engage my learners better when I only see them for short periods of time throughout the week? My mini inquiry project for OLTD 508 assessed whether game-based learning, like a Digital Escape Room, would engage and motivate learners in taking a course through ETHOS. Please read more about this project here: As the year unfolds, I am certain there will be more opportunities to examine technology within education in different ways. The first year provided a good foundation: Providing a basic understanding of online learning (OLTD 501), understanding instructional design (OLTD 512), understanding the importance of online communication (OLTD 503), developing a model LMS (OLTD 504), and pedagogical approaches to online learning (OLTD 502).
